Chapter 15: The Aqua Dragon Attacks

The riders spent the night quietly talking among themselves. Kyn and Carryl shared the various techniques they had used to help bring healing to those around them, while Casey and Davyd quietly chatted about the good old days. Every so often Wyn chimed in, and Carryl practiced keeping track of two conversations at once.

Finally, dawn came and with it time to prepare a meal. Carryl was tired, but not as badly as she had thought she would be. She met up with Kyn’s father and helped fix breakfast for everyone.

The day turned out to be run-of-the-mill. Carryl and Kyn took their leave and headed back to the dragon colony in Three Spans Canyon. When they arrived, they found that Glendyn had decided someone who could get messages to the riders should stay at the village. That meant someone with a dragon. He liked the way that Carryl had thought to use Wyn to communicate with another rider via his or her dragon.

The riders had mobilized themselves into groups to try to learn battle technique from Ruskya. Things hadn’t worked exactly as Glendyn had planned. They had discovered that Ruskya and Duskya were the only riders who could use mental imaging to block dragon fire, but several of the dragons had the ability to shield themselves and their riders. As the group’s healer, Carryl realized that it was to her advantage to find armor that would protect both the rider and the dragon.

“Kyn,” she called to the boy as he swooped past her, “do you know anyone in the village who is good with leather? I need someone who can fashion some kind of protection for our riders and dragons.”

The next couple of days fell into a routine. Kyn had commissioned someone to do the leatherwork. Carryl kept busy with trips to the village and her new responsibilities with the dragons. Kyn tried to teach her what he had done with Ruskya, but for her, this healing method seemed to only work on dragons. Conversely, the youngling’s technique worked with humans, but only his own dragon. It confused Carryl. Ruskya suggested that it might have something to do with Calamadyn.

Five days with no sign of the dragons brought dissent in the village. Although it was winter, the farmers did not like being cooped up in the canyon. They wanted to return to their homes. No matter how much Meredyth or Carryl tried to persuade them, several families headed back out to the outlaying farms. Carryl sighed, knowing her father would soon join them. She had been able to get to know him on a different level in the past days and they’d developed a mutual respect for one another. Yet, she knew he did not belong in the village. He was staying only because she was there.

Two days later, Carryl visited the village alone to check on her father. He was anxious to move back to the farm and told her so in no uncertain terms. She resigned herself to the inevitable and agreed to let him go back the next day.
